What is a Goldendoodle?

A Goldendoodle is a relatively new breed of dog which purposefully combines the highly desirable characteristics of the Golden Retriever and the Poodle. Once you've read this post, you'll be on your way to understanding why Golden Doodles are rapidly becoming one of the most sought-after dogs.

Golden retrievers are known throughout the world for being one of the best family-dogs out there. Their often 'goofy' personality and lovable nature has won the hearts of both children and adults alike. Despite their playful exuberance, golden retrievers are highly intelligent dogs. They are also known for being friendly, patient and loyal. However, golden retrievers are considerably large dogs and they do shed a lot of hair.

Poodles, also often referred to as 'French Poodles' are actually said to have originated in Germany, and come in a variety of sizes, ranging from about 1kg right up to 30kg. Poodles have a reputation for being highly intelligent, friendly dogs who are easy to train. They are also one of the few breeds which have a very low-shedding, dense, curly coat.

With allergies on the rise, the creation of the Goldendoodle has provided a hypo-allergenic option for those families who love dogs but who, for health reasons, are limited in what breed they can choose. Varying density of curls can be achieved according to the generational mix of the golden doodle. For example, there are F1, F1b, F1bb, F2, F2b, and Multi-gen doodles (See blog post titled "Types of Goldendoodles").

In addition, Goldendoodles can vary in size, depending on the size of the sire, or stud dog, thus providing an option for families with limited space. Golden doodles come in Standard, Medium, Mini, and Toy sizes.

Colours of Goldendoodles can also vary. They can come in white, beige, apricot, red, brown, grey or black. Some are an adorable combination of one colour with white patches.
